 * (10.9.2026) ZUSJE
 *********************************************/

Yesterday the first orphan was adopted, her name is 'zusje' and she is a 20 year old `iMac G5 20" Model A1145`.
She was found next to a trash bin in Scheveningen. The previous owners did not even bother wiping the hard drive.
It was adopted by Asya and me, and since the system was fully intact, we immediately used it as an artwork.
Live weather data was hooked up to a microcontroller to directly control mouse and keyboard. How would the weather
make use of a personal computer if it had direct access? We were about to see. It randomly renamed files, made screenshots,
opened and closed windows, it was an exciting watch. As a side effect crucial parts of the operating system were destroyed.
Zusje was ready for a new beginning. When she arrived in the orphanage, I started installing `Alpine Linux`.
Unfortunately Zusje did not approve. I tried to convince her with a series of changing commands to at least boot the installer.
I tried it with things like `probe-usb boot usb1/disk:3,\\tbxi` and `boot /ht@0,f2000000/pci@2/usb@b/disk@1:3,\\yaboot`,
or simply `boot ud:2,\\yaboot`. Nope. Zusje had some very specific ideas of how her memory should be accessed and this was not the way.
In particular was a pointing to an invalid memory access at `%SRR0 000000000.02040038 %SRR1: 10000000.00083030`. What could I do?
I already considered trying it with operating systems from the BSD family (just like her beloved Mac OS X was), when I realized that
there may be a Linux distribution especially targeted at old Macs which are just like zusje. And there is one.
`Adélie Linux`. A friendly appearance. Not too demanding. Small. In some ways close to BSD software philosophies.
Perhaps they could be a match? Indeed, today zusje successfully ran a Linux kernel for the first time! Hurray!
I am still mediating a permanent arrangement between these two, but this is a fantastic first step.

Here zusje and Adélie:

Afterwards we had a great meeting with the heads from GD and IMD departments (Lauren, Chantal and Anthony), and the
coordinators from GD (Marit and Ingrid). They all want to support zusje and computers like her. What a great day.

 *********************************************/

I was yesterday on a BringYourOwnBeamer event at my lovely friends from RNDR, and had many encouraging talks with various fascinating people about this project.
Actually, I believe I learned a lot. Also talking to Asya this morning helped me to get a better grip on priorities.
I'd love to write more, but I need to go and let my dog poop on the most appropriate piece of grass she can find.

also, I removed the flickering css background.

/*********************************************
 * (5.9.2026) HELLO, WORLD!
 *********************************************/

This is the first entry of this wonderful blog. It is the best blog that was ever served on this website. It's technology stack is `HYPERTEXT MARKUP LANGUAGE` written in a textfile. It's very minimal, but I couldn't stop myself to add flickering css animations.
I am currently planning out how the `COMpuTer lIBeRaTion StAtiION` will be structured. There is so much to think about.
What I have done so far:
> did secure the domain `liberate.technology`
> did start writing a general project plan
> did secure general support from the GD department @ KABK, The Hague (yesssssss, thank you Lauren & Chantal!)
> did secure weekly day to work on this (Wednesday)
> thought about servers
> thought about local infrastructure
> thought about interesting services to host
> thought about getting more hardware (orphans)
> thought about calculating a budget plan
> thought about a timeline over the next year
> thought about thinking more effectively

A next step will be to document all of the thoughts, and take care of the first orphans.

The main structure*:
> "computer liberation station" is the umbrella for everything
> "computer orphanage" is where anyone can donate old computers for the project
> "hive mind" is a prototype experiment for a modular communication platform
> "scatter brain" is a (potential) research lab for running decentralized local AI
> "disenshittification hour" is where you can improve your digital environment

That's all I have time for right now. Shall it be glorious!

Cheers,
Jakob

*) components of the main structure might suddenly disappear, appear or mutate.
A lot depends on whether it is possible to secure extra funding beyond the support from KABK.
